GCC Chamber Meeting: Unicorns and the China Rich List


The economy is sluggish, real estate and education is down, the geopolitical environment is complicated and anti-monopoly trends are all combining to suggest a negative economic output. Yet, there has been a surge in new energy and  2021 has been the best year in the history of the world for billion-dollar startups, aka unicorns. 


Between the US and China, they have 75% of the world’s known unicorns and 50% of the world’s dollar billionaires. Where are they coming from?  What are their trends? Who are these billionaires? The stories of these unicorns and billionaires tell the story of China’s economy. This talk should be of interest to those looking to understand the start-up ecosystem and the top entrepreneurs in China today.

    Titus von dem Bongart joined EY Shanghai as a Partner in 2006 after working 10 years for other international well-known accounting firm. He is an Attorney-at- Law and holds relevant degrees from the University of Bonn and the Court of Appeals in Schleswig. He is a lecturer for Chinese Tax at the University of Hamburg as well as the Tongji University in Shanghai.

    He has been the Chairman of the German Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai from 2010 to 2016. Since 22 years, Titus von dem Bongart has regularly advised clients on various matters related to their China investment, e.g. the restructuring of their China set-up/ China impact of international restructurings including supply chain models and other changes.
